A Year of Glacier photos

Me, fresh to Palmer, in April '08

And me, last night. Sorry, had to take my own photo!

A small nook opening under the glacier

All the cover for that "nook" has disappeared, along with much of the glacier face

A small finger of rock showing through the glacier

It's not such a small finger any more

So, it's been almost a year. It's amazing to me how much the glacier has changed in the time I've been here. In one of the very first posts, my friends and I sat on the glacier and had our photo taken- that part of the glacier that we sat on is gone now, it's melted away. I actually had a hard time finding the spot I always stand in to take these photos because the glacier has receded so far up the slope. There was so much exposed rock that it made the area unfamiliar.
I hope to come back here someday but I'm afraid I might not recognize it when I get here.

How much melting is normal throughout the year? Do they expect what has melted to return or is it likely gone for good due to global warming? -Michelle
